TEAM 3DMJ SPONSORED ATHLETE - JASON BOSAK Mineral Point, Wisconsin Jason's Introduction Interview With 3DMJ on January 14, 2010
3DMJ: Please tell us a little about who you are as an individual and as a natural bodybuilder. JB: Well I’ve recently returned to college to finish the degree I started in 2002. I am studying to be a Physical Education/Health teacher with a certification in Adaptive PE. I am a full time student, bodybuilder and husband and work at a local gas station while I’m in school. So I’ve got a lot on my plate right now, but it makes life exciting! My wife, Brittany, and I have a 4 year old Goldendoodle named Kramer. As far as we’re concerned, he is our son and he gets spoiled accordingly. I work out at the local gym in town called Fitness Point. It has a great atmosphere, with the upstairs containing most of the machines and cardio equipment, and the dungeon-like basement contains the majority of the free weights and loud music!Out of high school, I played a little bit of college football, but didn’t really enjoy it anymore. After one year, I stopped playing, but continued training. In 2004, I suffered a serious shoulder injury that kept me from weights for a year. My doctor told me I should just give up on lifting weights, even though I explained how important it was to me. It seemed that without training, my life as a whole got off track. After some time I tried to start training again on a couple separate occasions, but I was discouraged by how much weaker I was after my injury. Then I came up with an idea: I would train with only DB’s on pressing movements, until much of my strength came back. This way, I didn’t get discouraged by the thought of only being able to bench so little, and I kept at it. Thank God for muscle memory! The strength it had taken me years to gain came back in what seemed like overnight! In total I have been weight training for about 12 years, with the only time off being that one year when my shoulder was healing. It was only in the last couple years that I really became interested in natural bodybuilding. Prior to that, I had only been focused on getting as big and strong as possible. I basically had been bulking for 12 years leading into this contest preparation! I was very worried about the financial end of contest prep having returned to school and funds being limited. However, I have been very fortunate recently. “All American EFX” has given me a supplement sponsorship, so I get to have access to their amazing line of products. That help has been immeasurable! Now I have the distinct honor of getting to work with Eric, Brad, Alberto, and Jeff! I am absolutely stoked for this opportunity!
3DMJ: Tell us about your family and friends and how they have supported you in your natural bodybuilding endeavors. JB: My wife Brittany is my anchor! She is my biggest support system and she motivates and encourages me! She is also a health nut. It’s very easy prepping with her as my wife because we don’t keep any bad foods in the house, and she likes it that way! She is also my training partner, so that helps keep me accountable for our workouts! She is willing to make sacrifices so that I can be successful at this and above all else, she believes in me! My parents and brothers and in-laws are all very supportive of me, even though they don’t completely understand it yet. But they soon will, as I will have a LARGE cheering section in attendance at the show!
3DMJ: How did you get started in natural bodybuilding? JB: Well I had always been interested in getting as big and strong as possible, but didn’t really know about natural bodybuilding. I always thought that the IFBB was the only type of bodybuilding, and I knew I didn’t look anything like them, so the thought of competing never really crossed my mind. My goal was just to get as close to looking like them as I could. In 2005, I heard that my friend, Kyle Hannah, was competing in a bodybuilding show from his Dad. I looked him up online and found his log on bodybuilding.com. From there, I started seeing pictures and logs of natural bodybuilders. It was awesome to me! I looked through contest photos and thought to myself, “I could do that!” It gave my training a purpose, and since then I have wanted nothing more than to one day be a natural pro! As a future Physical Education and Health Teacher, it will be my great task to educate and inspire the youth of this country to live healthy and happy lives! Natural bodybuilding is the perfect way for me to practice what I preach and reap the rewards of a healthy lifestyle.
3DMJ: Who or what has been your major influence in the sport of natural bodybuilding? JB: Well, firstly, my friend Kyle Hannah was my major influence for getting me into natural bodybuilding. Once I started learning about natural bodybuilding, I started reading a lot of stuff from Layne Norton and John Hansen. As I got closer to competing, I started following more of the journals on bodybuilding.com and have met some amazing natural bodybuilders that have really motivated me. Sean (“Austrianoakjr” on the forums), Joe Goebel, Eric Helms, Brad Loomis, Alberto Nunez, and Chris Lawrence have all been huge inspirations for me. The one guy I’ve come to know and look up to the most is (Future Pro) Luke Ehlis. The guy just gives me something to work toward and is just a constant source of motivation!
3DMJ: What are some of your highlights thus far in your natural bodybuilding career? JB: Unfortunately none as of yet, but I intend for this list to be a long one by the time I’m done!
3DMJ: List your contest history. JB: The NANBF Natural Mr. Minnesota will be my first show!
3DMJ: When did you get started with weight training? JB: I remember being 10 years old and spending summers with my brother “Bubba”, lifting weights for hours a day! We’d start with the ESPN morning workouts and then go on to lift and run for the rest of the day! I suppose I started actually training at 13 years old. My Brother was a grade ahead of me in school and as a freshman was one of the strongest guys in the school already. He was my big bro, and I looked up to him very much. I was one of the only middle schoolers in the weight room every single day, but I was determined to catch up to my big brother! It took me until my junior year (his senior), but I did finally catch up to him!
3DMJ: Describe your training style. JB: I describe my training style as instinctive. In my 12 years of training, I have tried quite a few different programs. I’ve taken things from each of them that I really like. I’ll go to the gym with an idea of what I want to get done, but for the most part I just decide as I go. I never plan sets and reps. I like getting in a lot of variety in that sense. I also don’t stick to any one type of intensity technique. I like forced and cheat reps, and pre exhaust sets. I use drop sets, supersets, giant sets, and just about any other method you can name. So to sum it up, I like challenging, damaging and stimulating my muscles in a variety of ways to ensure total development of the muscle.
3DMJ: Describe your current training split. JB: Day 1- Back and Hamstrings Day 2- Chest and Biceps Day 3- Shoulders, Traps and Triceps Day 4- Legs with a quadriceps emphasis, Calves Day 5- Off Day 6- Chest and Back Day 7- Biceps and Triceps Day 8 - Legs Day 9- Shoulders and Traps Day 10- Off Repeat I follow Cardio on a 2 days on/2 day off rotation
3DMJ: Describe your nutrition. JB: I have macronutrient goals that I hit on a daily basis. How I get there isn’t necessarily a big deal, but I of course, like to have my fats be as healthy as possible and my carbohydrates to be as complex as possible. My protein levels are pretty moderate and I have a low fat intake, thus being able to fill in the rest of my caloric needs with carbohydrates. This keeps my muscle glycogen stores high for optimal performance and recovery, while shedding fat. The bulk of my carbohydrate intake is taken pre and post workout. I also like to make sure I get at least a little fat in each meal to help control insulin a bit. 3DMJ: Describe your cardio training. JB: For the time being, I primarily perform steady-state cardio. I like to add in variety as to which form of cardio I perform, but keep the intensity relatively consistent. I perform between 30 and 60 minutes, while keeping my heart rate between 115 and 140 beats per minute 3DMJ: What are your goals in the sport of natural bodybuilding? JB: My short term goal is to win the NANBF Natural Minnesota by (with 3DMJ’s help) coming in insanely shredded! And my long term goal is be the IFPA World Champion! I’m giving myself about 8-12 years to achieve that one! 3DMJ: What would you change or do to improve the sport of natural bodybuilding? JB: I think that natural bodybuilding, in order to become as successful as possible, needs a vessel like the IFBB has. When you think of where most of the IFBB fans come from, it’s from being readers of FLEX, Muscular Development, etc. Natural Bodybuilding is in need of an EDGY, hardcore, “cool” monthly magazine. One that excites the public and shows them that natural bodybuilding is as hardcore as the IFBB’s version of bodybuilding! 3DMJ: What did you feel like after hearing the news you were selected as TEAM 3DMJ’S sponsored athlete for the 2010 contest season? JB: My confidence shot through the roof! I felt like a million bucks! Going into this prep, I knew that I knew how to build muscle, but I had no experience getting shredded. I knew having a coach would be a great help, but honestly didn’t know if I’d be able to afford it. When I saw the opportunity for 3DMJ, I knew I had to try for it. I knew the coaches from bodybuilding.com and these four guys are exactly who I think of when I think of getting SHREDDED! Each one of them knows how to get ripped to the bone. So having the four of them putting their heads together for me is the greatest opportunity I could have asked for! 3DMJ: What do you feel TEAM 3DMJ brings to the table when it comes to contest preparation? JB: Knowledge, experience and motivation! These guys all obviously know what it takes to get lean. It’s easy to take advice from them when I’ve seen the results in their physiques. 3DMJ: TEAM 3DMJ is based on having the dedication, desire and the discipline to build a great physique, as TEAM 3DMJ’s sponsored athlete, how do you fit that mold? JB: Dedication- I have been training for basically my entire life. I was even lifting weights when I was 10 years old. I started seriously training at 13, so that gives me 13 years of training. I believe that is the type of dedication one needs to be successful. Discipline- I don't skip workouts and I don't have "easy" workouts. I track everything that goes into my body, and I’m aware of everything I do with my body. I'm aware of outside stresses that can affect me mentally and physically. 3DMJ: We are very excited to be following along with you during your journey, what can we expect in the weeks ahead as you move forward with TEAM 3DMJ during your journey to the stage? JB: Well, with the help of Team 3DMJ I am confident that you will see consistent improvements though hard work and dedication. You will see all-out workouts, videos of some unique lifts, and some intense and fun pictures! I hope you get a glimpse of my life as I continue to have fun and love every minute leading up to the show. You’ll see my bodybuilding journey, but also my everyday-life along the way. I hope you get to know me, not only as a bodybuilder, but as a person. I’m sure there will be some struggles and sometimes things won’t go as planned, but expect to see perseverance as we work through all obstacles thrown our way! 3DMJ: Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years as a natural bodybuilder? JB: I see myself as an IFPA pro. I see myself as one of the guys that the kids on the forums look up to: someone who helps inspire young men to get into natural bodybuilding. I hope that in 5 years, I will be known as a bodybuilder who awes the crowd every time he steps onstage! It’s good to have lofty goals!
