Team 3DMJ Coach - Eric Helms

Pro Natural Bodybuilder, MPhil, MS, CSCS

Eric began his bodybuilding journey at six foot, 170lbs at the age of 21 in 2004. What originally began as a border-line destructive, unhealthy obsession, bodybuilding eventually transformed into a healthy life passion. Eric had fitness and athletic experience by the time he was bitten by the iron bug, yet nothing challenged him like bodybuilding. Fighting for every ounce of muscle, Eric continually strives to transform his physique into that of a champion natural bodybuilder and powerlifter.

Eric forges his physique through determination, desire, dedication, and a commitment to learning the intricate details of physiology, nutrition and exercise science.

Eric Helms has been a strength coach and professional trainer for over a decade. He’s worked as a physical conditioning leader and mentor in the United States Air Force, a multi-sport strength and conditioning coach, a trainer in gyms, private studios, medical fitness and rehabilitation centers. He’s taught and designed courses on sports nutrition, exercise science, weight training program design and coaching theory at the post-secondary level at Bryan College in Sacramento California. He has also taught as a graduate teaching assistant and guest lecturer at the Auckland University of Technology (AUT), teaching and guest lecturing at the graduate and undergraduate level on topics related to enhancing muscular performance and applied sports nutrition.

Eric has a comprehensive array of certifications in the fields of personal training, performance enhancement, sports nutrition and strength and conditioning. He has a Bachelor’s in Sports Management: Fitness and Wellness, and a Master’s in Exercise Science & Health Promotion: Performance Enhancement & Injury Prevention from the California University of Pennsylvania. He also has a Master's of Philosophy from AUT in Auckland, New Zealand with a thesis titled "Exploring protein and macronutrient intakes in lean bodybuilders during caloric restriction." He has published numerous peer reviewed journal articles and commercial fitness magazine articles in the fitness, nutrition, strength and bodybuilding fields. He’s continuing his studies as a PhD student in Strength & Conditioning researching auto-regulation in resistance training at AUT.
