Katy Wayman-White: 2010 IFPA Pro USA Champ Introduction and interview by Alberto Nunez
3DMJ: First of all thank you for taking the time to do this interview. We are very grateful and proud to showcase such awesome talent on 3DMJ. How did you initially get involved in bodybuilding, and how long ago? KW: I was introduced to the sport of bodybuilding by a guy I was dating. He took me to a show and that was all that was required. I competed 3 months later. That was 27 years ago. 3DMJ: Your career highlights? The most memorable moments of your bodybuilding career? KW: My career highlights are not the wins. I had the opportunity to share the stage with my youngest son in a tribute to my brother who had passed away. I posed to “The power of God” while he translated the words in American Sign Language. The other highlight of my career was receiving a “Spirit Award” at the show held in KC last year. Two very incredible moments in my life.
3DMJ: Your current goals, both short term and long term? KW: Develop my legs, which will be a permanent goal of mine as long as I compete. My long term goal is to get into Head Judging so that I can give back to a sport that has brought me so much joy in my life.
3DMJ: What have been the key components to having quite the illustrious career in bodybuilding? KW: Keeping my focus on myself. I have always tried to be better than I was the year before which has nothing to do with where I place. Setting goals and sticking to the process to try to achieve those goals. 3DMJ: You always seem to be having a ball up there, what is your favorite part of it all? KW: Performing at the night show is the best, however meeting people and relationships that are formed because of those meetings last a lifetime.
3DMJ: We talked briefly at a seminar a while back about your old powerlifting numbers, and your bench press left everyone in awe. Many of the guys here at 3DMJ love powerlifting, and just plain simply admire heavy lifting. What are some of your more notable personal best lifts, both in competition, and in the gym? KW:1280 on the leg press, and 120’s on dumbbell flat presses. My max barbell bench was 285lbs before I started doing dumbbell bench presses probably 6 years ago.
3DMJ: What does your training look like these days, what seems to work best for you? KW: I train twice a day Mon/Thurs-Hams am, quads pm, Tues/Fri-Back am, Shoulders & Triceps pm, Wed/Sat-Biceps am, Chest pm-I always lift heavy no more than 10 reps no less than six-except for legs. No limits!
3DMJ: How do you approach your nutrition both in the offseason, and when dieting for a show? KW: Offseason, I just try to make sure I get enough protein in my diet. When preparing for a show, I eat every 1 ½ hours and I eat a lot of red meat and carbs with every meal. I eat a lot.
3DMJ: Why did you make the decision to stay natural? KW: I liked how I looked. I had never seen anyone that was not drug free with a physique that I liked or wanted to look like.
3DMJ: Many of us look up to you and admire your physique, and accomplishments. What have been your inspirations, and not just limited to the bodybuilding world? KW: My inspiration is my parents. My parents adopted me as an infant. They loved me, taught me right from wrong and they taught me I could do anything I wanted. Through my whole amateur bodybuilding career they were at every show cheering me on. My father passed away 17 years ago but my Mom still supports my journeys. I know they did not understand the sport, but they were my biggest cheerleaders. In their eyes I was always a winner! 3DMJ: Any advice you would give women thinking about trying bodybuilding? KW: Don’t try to be someone else. Accept your physique and make it the best it can be. Believe in yourself. Don’t be afraid to lift weights.
3DMJ: In a sport of extremes, what are some good tips you would recommend to younger competitors still learning to balance all aspects of life with bodybuilding? KW: Be very organized. In every aspect I think planning is the key and the ability to follow through. Plan time for the things you want to accomplish and stick to it. 3DMJ: Once again, from all of us at 3DMJ and natural bodybuilding fans out there, thank you for taking the time to do an interview with us. We are very grateful and proud to showcase such an awesome talent on 3DMJ.

I first got to meet Katy in 2008 at the INBF Capital City show, but I had seen her in Natural Bodybuilding and Fitness magazine numerous times before. I recall vividly a side chest shot in particular, easily being one of the most well balanced physiques I’d ever seen. So elegant, so lean, and with proportions that made you want to run to the gym that instant. She would be a guest poser that night in 2008. I was too nervous and shy to approach her, so I texted my girlfriend (since I was backstage with the other competitors), telling her: “Make sure you get plenty of pictures!” Katy, along with other great natural female bodybuilders, took the stage to guest-pose that night and left everyone in awe. The crowd got more than their money’s worth, it was an amazing routine. I won my pro card that night, but the morning after, Katy was just as much the talk in my house, especially among the women. “Her back was so beautiful”, my girlfriend stated as she showed me pictures on my camera. My mother could not believe how amazing muscle could look on a woman. Katy never means to be the show stopper, anyone who has ever met her knows her for being sweet, humble, and soft spoken. But, she is just as much all-muscles as she is all-smiles. It is with great pleasure that we feature Katy Wayman-White on 3DMUSCLEJOURNEY.
