On April 17, 2010 TEAM 3DMJ made their debut as a power lifting team at Bodytribe Fitness in beautiful downtown Sacramento, CA. The team proudly captured a few personal records during its very successful showing, winning three class titles and one 2nd place finish!

TEAM 3DMJ Coach Alberto Nunez showed true grit and determination as he narrowly missed a first place title. Alberto ended with a strong second in the most competitive division, the open 198 lbs. weight class. No stranger to moving heavy weight, Alberto displayed his strength with a 465 lbs. squat which surpassed his personal record. With his bench press, he was able to secure 300 lbs. and made it look like a warm up set. Although he pushed up 330 lbs. rather easily on his 3rd and final attempt, the judges denied the lift on a very controversial technicality. A little disappointed with the judges’ decision, Alberto did not let that stop him from setting another personal record in the dead lift. With 550 lbs. loaded to the bar, Alberto paced back and forth with a vicious scowl like a great Bengal tiger ready to attack its prey. Seconds later the attack ensued, and when it was over, another personal record was set! His 550 lbs. dead lift highlighted his terrific showing with 1,315 total pounds lifted.

Getting ready for the attack and then it was quickly over, 550 lbs. lifted.

TEAM 3DMJ Coach Brad Loomis captured the division title in the open 181 lbs. class with a combined total of 1,100 pounds. He opened up the meet in naturally intense fashion by squatting 375 pounds, more than twice his bodyweight and a new personal record. Brad continued his momentum with another personal record bench pressing 300 lbs. He then pulled a fierce 425 lbs. in the always exciting dead lift. This was Brad’s second straight open 181 lbs. class win in as many tries. Not only is Brad an awesome competitor, but he also gives back to the sport and he will be hosting “The Billy Funk Memorial Power Lifting Championships” on October 9, 2010 at his gym, Healthy Bodies Fitness, in Portola, CA. TEAM 3DMJ Coach Eric Helms valiantly took home his first class win in the very challenging open 220 lbs. division with a combined total of 1,275 lbs. He cranked out new personal records in all three lifts. He nailed a 440 lbs. squat, a 325 lbs. bench press and a 510 lbs. dead lift. Eric’s dead lift is a sight to behold as his initial explosion off the floor is quite incredible. Since his last bodybuilding contest back in September, he has switched gears to power lifting and has reaped the rewards by breaking new personal records at last Saturday’s power lifting meet. After devising and executing his highly productive training program, he achieved his goals in perfect style! Placing second in his last four power lifting meets, Eric was proud of the hard work that lead to his first place title win on Saturday. Knowing his relentless drive to continually improve, this will only be the first title of many to come.

"Eric cranked out new personal records in all three of the required lifts."

Eric hit a personal record with a 440 lb. squat.

His second personal record of the meet with a 325 lb. bench press.

And then another personal record to cap off his best ever meet with a 510 lb. deadlift.

Also representing TEAM 3DMJ at last Saturday’s meet, was nineteen year old Chris Basil. Chris was competing in his first meet and he walked away with two trophies to his credit. Chris totaled 1,100 lbs. which led him to a 4th place finish in the open 198 lbs. class and a 1st place finish in the 18-19 year old class. He showed true heart as he gritted out 375 lbs. on the squat and then hit a rather easy 275 lbs. bench press and an impressive 450 lbs. dead lift. Chris demonstrated an overwhelming amount of poise for a first time competitor and at such a young age, only bigger and better things are coming his way.

Chris was money on this 375 lb. squat.

A 275 lb. bench with plenty of room to spare.

Chris finished off with an impressive 450 lb. dead lift.

The meet was definitely the highlight of the day, but this was just a small portion of what the day would truly be about. It was a day filled with downfalls and triumphs, missed lifts and the many personal records achieved. When the team failed a lift, a simple instruction, fist bump or a “nice try” was enough to keep one another moving forward. Always looking out for each other, we shared encouraging words and embraces in times of triumph. We partook in each other’s success and happiness. It was these little things that made us a single unit. The day was about us as a team. We performed quite well, but it was also the time spent with family, friends and one another that will be treasured for a lifetime. The events that transpired last Saturday, from the meet to the after-meet pizza dinner at Chicago Fire, and lastly the gathering at TEAM 3DMJ Coach Eric Helms’ home to celebrate his 27th birthday, will go down in 3DMJ history! This is what 3DMJ is all about; it is about sharing our sport as a family and a community. Some may think bodybuilding or power lifting is an individual sport only to boost one’s ego, but after this great event I beg to differ!
